Challenges Ahead
  • Capital program. New classrooms and office. Computers.
  • Developing a stronger curriculum.
  • Self sufficiency.
  • Our aim is to raise $US15,000 for new projects.

Involvement with Savong and his school has led to a wider understanding of Cambodia and its future, and has also led to some consideration of how the school will need to develop.

There are definite projects ahead including the building of upstairs offices and classroom space over the existing rooms. (We have the stairs. The next building project will cost around $US13k.) Once these are complete then there will be a secure space for a set of computers to give the students computer learning – at least when the generator is going.

The wider challenge is to help develop improved teaching material. Many texts are too Western in content (“Meet Jenny – she uses her microwave!”) and one legacy of Pol Pot is the lack of literature – in Khmer – that could be used as the basis for translations. If you have a teaching background, then you might consider assisting in the form of developing lesson plans.

Ever since building began in mid 2005 (photo) Savong is keen to make the school as self-sufficient as possible in the long-term. Steps he's taking include partnership in a Siem Reap Guest House (D&D Angkor Villa) which provides a small revenue stream but also a conduit for volunteer teachers and more potential supporters. We're also developing brochures inviting other tourists at other Guest Houses to try the teaching experience, for a donation of $US25. These things are time consuming for Savong and his wife Aneed, but so far they've been beneficial for the students who enjoy meeting foreigners and trying their English.
